Exhibition and Performance Because the necks are unusually long, the birds have to deeply inhale and deeply exhale to mediate proper air exchange. If even slightly compromised, the breath won’t be long enough to bridge the distance between lungs and beak. If a breath does not go all the way down, it is then at risk for not making it all the way back up. Sometimes a breath will continuously rise and fall like an elevator glitching between floors. In such a situation, the breath is stuck and the bird dies.
